Book Review: Hester by Laurie Lico Albanese

In this book review, I acknowledge that Laurie Lico Albanese's novel Hester, both a prequel and a retelling of The Scarlett Letter, is a true masterpiece.

If you love the classic story by Nathaniel Hawthorne or the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, I recommend this novel. Through the Scottish character of seamstress Hester, Albanese has created a strong and resilient woman whose story is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Albanese expertly weaves together the story of Hester, a young woman who arrives in America and meets Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the story of the Salem witch trials, overseen by Hawthorne's ancestor, Judge John Hathorne. The author also addresses enslavement, something not considered or addressed by Hawthorne. The author demonstrates exceptional sensitivity and thoughtfulness in exploring difficult themes such as loss, grief, and redemption. For those who have an appreciation for historical fiction or a well-written and engaging story, Hester is a must-read. Albanese's writing is exceptional, and readers will no doubt eagerly anticipate her next work. I, for one, most certainly do.
